Elective course
For students who are enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree programme at a Dutch university (of applied sciences), it is possible to take one or more elective courses from another degree programme than their main programme. These elective courses may also be courses taught at other universities. Students are then seen as guest students. Guest students can take courses, but are not entitled to a degree from the course where they are taking elective courses.
Please note: to participate in MSc courses you must have completed at least a BSc degree.
The following courses at TU Delft currently do not offer the opportunity to take elective courses:
- Bachelor Aerospace Engineering
- Bachelor of Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences
- Bachelor Computer Science & Engineering
- Bachelor Clinical Technology
- Master Robotics
- Master Technical Medicine (joint degree)
- Master Applied Geophysics (joint degree)
- Master Metropolitan Analysis, Design and Engineering (joint degree)
- Master Geographical Information Management and Applications (joint degree)

I want to take a course at another degree programme at TU Delft
Orient yourself well and timely to the courses you want to take. Check the TU Delft study guide for the course description, information about required prior knowledge, application procedure and deadlines.
Have you made a choice? Then check whether you are admissible in one of the following ways:
For courses at the faculty of EWI, IO, BK and/or LR: Contact the Elective course coordinator of the faculty and ask whether you can participate in the course you have chosen. The faculty will assess your application to take the course. Do you have permission to participate in one or more courses? Then you make agreements with the faculty about what you still need to arrange in order to participate.
For courses at the faculty of CiTG, TBM and/or TNW: Look carefully at the required prior knowledge. Are you admissible? Then go to the Brightspace environment of the course and register there.
For courses at the faculty of ME: Contact the course coordinator (see the study guide) to check whether you can participate. After a positive response from the faculty, you can register for the courses. For BSc courses this is done via OSIRIS, for MSc courses you can register in Brightspace.
I want to take an elective course at another educational institution
As a TU Delft student, you can take one or more courses at another Dutch university. Please visit the website of the respective university for more information on conditions and deadlines for enrolment. When enrolling, you will need to provide Proof of Paid Tuition Fee (Bewijs Betaald Collegegeld: BBC), which you can request digitally from TU Delft via Studielink.
Please note: You need to have a valid enrolment at the TU Delft!
For some TU Delft students, it is also possible to study at a university abroad. This is not an elective course, but a more extensive educational programme. Would you like to know if it is possible for you to study a part of your programme abroad? Please view the Study Abroad webpage for more information.
I am enrolled at another Dutch educational institution
For external students who wish to be enrolled as a guest student at TU Delft, the following conditions apply:
- You are enrolled as a bachelor's or master's student at another Dutch higher education institution (and have paid tuition fees there);
- You meet the admission requirements that apply for the BSc programme or MSc programme in which you want to take a course*;
- As a guest student, you can take a maximum of 30 ECs per programme in courses. The maximum of 30 ECs is not a maximum per academic year, but a maximum per programme. This may not be exceeded in subsequent years either;
- The courses are documented in the Elective course form;
- As a guest student, you are not entitled to a diploma from the degree programme in which you are taking elective courses.
*In exceptional cases, it is possible to participate in a course without meeting the BSc or MSc admission requirement. In that case, you must be able to demonstrate that you have acquired sufficient prior knowledge in your own programme to participate in the elective course. To this end, you must submit a substantiated request via the elective course coordinator of the relevant faculty in a timely manner.
What you need to arrange for enrolment as a guest student at TU Delft:
- Research and familiarize yourself well and timely with the courses you want to take. Check the TU Delft study guide for the course description, information about required prior knowledge, application procedure and deadlines.
- Please contact the faculty’s elective course coordinator well in advance of the start of the course and ask whether you can participate in the course you have chosen.
The faculty will assess your application to take the courses. Do you have permission to participate in one or more courses? Please arrange the following:
- Submit an Enrolment application as a guest student via Studielink for the programme under which the course falls. Select the month in which the (first) subject starts as the start date and select the educational institution "Delft University of Technology". Are you going to take courses from different degree programmes? One Enrolment application in Studielink is sufficient, choose the programme where you will earn the most ECs.
- Request a BBC (Proof of Paid Tuition Fee) via Studielink when entering the payment details for TU Delft.
- Fill out and sign an elective course form (per programme). Send the form to the elective course coordinator of the relevant faculty for signature and explain which degree programme/prior knowledge enables you to follow this course well.
Please note: if you want to take one (or more) course(s) from different programmes, you must submit multiple forms. An elective course form is valid for one academic year. If you reapply for the a subsequent academic year, you must fill out a new elective course form. - After approval and signing, the faculty will send the elective course form to the student administration to further process your application.
Please note!
- Without a valid BBC and elective course form, the Enrolment application cannot be processed and you will not be enrolled.
- Obtained results (grades) are not automatically sent to the main educational institution. You can download a certified transcript of records/grade list on MyTUDelft. After logging in, select Progress and Transcript of records (top right) and then make the desired selection.
- The guest student enrolment at TU Delft runs until the end of the academic year. If you want your enrolment to be terminated earlier, you can arrange this yourself via Studielink.
