MSc Design for Interaction
What product or service can we design to help children feel less isolated during medical treatments? How can designers promote more sustainable eating habits? How could a design approach help governments increase democratic participation? And with what concepts or metaphors can we help people imagine the opportunities and risks AI holds for their personal lives?
The Design for Interaction (DfI) master’s programme focuses on the quality of the relationships designers create in and through their practice. The programme provides students with cutting edge concepts, tools and methods to understand people, how they perceive and relate to the world around them, and how others, technology and the designed environment shape these relations over time.

Designers shape the future. Products, services, processes and environments impact how we think and communicate, what we find important and care about, and how we act – as individuals, in communities and as society. The power of design comes with the responsibility to work closely with people and organizations in line with their values, aspirations and needs. It also requires designers to commit to diversity by facilitating inclusive, empowering design processes. For this reason the programme combines theory and practice, and engages with real world problems. Students enjoy opportunities to collaborate with a range of stakeholders – companies, government, NGOs and communities – and take advantage of the Department of Human-Centered Design’s extensive research activities and networks.
DfI students learn how to leverage the relational and experiential qualities of design to give form to products and services that enrich people’s lives, support new ways of thinking and acting, and promote sustainable and just futures. They become experts in creating meaningful experiences and designing for social impact. Teachers support the learning journey by providing students with a challenging yet flexible learning environment, the state-of-the-art in interdisciplinary design approaches and methods, plenty of opportunities to experiment and gain practical experience, and a variety of perspectives on design culture.

The "Unaccompanied Minor" project
What started off as a project to design a new service for the most vulnerable passenger of all: children travelling alone, became one of the most illustrative projects of what design can bring to a corporate environment.
