During your stay abroad
You have finally arrived at your host destination. After all the preparation and possible stress, it’s time to enjoy and maximise the experience. Maybe the language is new, the University/institute smaller, more than likely the country will be bigger, wherever you have landed to start your stay abroad, TU Delft will guide you through this experience and is always there to help.
Getting settled
Discover helpful ways to make your transition to your host country easier.
- Moving in – bring something from your home country to share with a coffee to help introduce yourself to room-mates of other students in your accommodation, it’ll help break the ice (i.e. stroopwafels, Dutch Drop)
- Welcome Week – Take part in the introduction programmes and events, this will help you meet other exchange students and local students and become part of an international family. You will also meet your lecturers and teachers.
- Learn the local language or improve your language skills – this will no doubt help you move around your new city/country with ease.
- Budget – Try to give yourself a budget to survive the period of stay and to be able to travel around and see all the tourist hot spots while there.
- Be aware of issues you may face – life might not always go to plan while away, so it is important to be aware of where you can find a local doctor, hospital and police station. TU Delft Travel Insurance can assist you should a problem arise, ensure you check out the insurance page for emergency information. Preparation for all eventualities is key.
Changes to your stay
Changes to your stay abroad can always occur when away from home.
They can range from coming home earlier due to a change in exam schedule, a family event, natural disaster, or personal circumstances. You may have to stay a bit longer due to an examination re-sit, your project needs extending, or you just didn’t realise that the semester lasted longer.
Whatever the reason for staying longer or coming home sooner you must inform the following person/s:
- Your faculty exchange coordinator or Faculty Internship coordinator or Supervisor
- The Mobility team at ESA (outgoingglobal-esa@tudelft.nl)
- Osiris Student (Stay abroad registration in Osiris).
- Date changes may affect your awarded grant/scholarship, it is important to notify the relevant departments at TU Delft and change your travel dates in your Stay abroad Registration.
Promote TU Delft
While you are abroad you are a representative of TU Delft and are expected to promote TU Delft to students and or colleagues at the host.
Exchange students can highlight the study options and culture in the Netherlands. Students doing research/Thesis work can promote TU Delft for future projects or promote the company to TU Delft too.
Most grants applications require TU Delft students to do this while they are away.
