Green Travel Map
Are you planning your next trip from Delft to a European city? The Green Travel Map is a tool to quickly check if the train or bus is a viable option for your trip. The map shows travel times and CO2 emissions for 87 European destinations that are frequently visited by the TU Delft community. With the Green Travel Map you can compare travelling by plane, train and international bus to your destination. This way, it is easier to make a more sustainable choice.
How do we calculate travel times and emissions
We make every effort to ensure accuracy in the Green Travel Map data, but please note that actual times and emissions may vary depending on the specific dates, times and routes of travel.
-
- The Green Travel Map shows the fastest option for each mode of transport
- Journey times are calculated from the centre of Delft to the centre of the destination city (station to station).
- Data sources: NS International, Google Maps and FlixBus.
-
- The CO2 emissions in the Green Travel Map have been calculated using www.ecopassenger.org, an online tool that compares the energy consumption, CO2 and atmospheric emissions of airplanes, cars and trains for passenger transport. Ecopassenger's methodology for calculating emissions is based on internationally recognised, evidence-based standards. For more information, see the Ecopassenger Methodology Report.
- Destinations not included in this tool are calculated with https://www.myclimate.org/en/, of which the calculation methods can be found here: https://www.myclimate.org/en/information/about-myclimate/downloads/flight-emission-calculator/.
-
- Airplane
- It is assumed that flights are taken from Schiphol Airport and that travel to Schiphol is by train.
- A 39 minute journey from Delft train station to Schiphol Airport is therefore taken into account.
- For air travel, check-in, security and baggage are taken into account at Schiphol and at the destination. Therefore, 2 hours extra travel time is added.
- Train
- All train journeys take place between Delft's main station (Delft Station) and the central or main station of the destination city.
- Bus
- It is assumed that if there is an international bus departing from Rotterdam, this bus will be taken and the journey to the bus station will be made by train. Therefore, the bus journey time is 13 minutes to the international bus station in Rotterdam.
- If there is no international bus from Rotterdam, it is assumed that the international bus from the bus station in Amsterdam is taken and that the journey to the bus station is by train. Therefore, 58 minutes travel time to the international bus station in Amsterdam is considered for these bus travel times.
- For train journeys to both international bus stations, the additional emissions are calculated using www.ecopassenger.org.
- For international bus emissions, data from the Atmosfair Flixbus Report on emissions per kilometre travelled per passenger is used:
- Airplane
