Prospective Architecture students should prepare for their studies through the self-study course Language of Architecture.
During the course, you will complete assignments related to various lectures and videos that are relevant at the start of the Architecture program. You will also submit two assignments - both written and spoken - and receive feedback from the teacher. The course concludes with an exam in which you listen to both a familiar and an unfamiliar lecture and provide a summary. The acquired technical vocabulary and the student's listening skills are crucial for passing the exam.
Study load
The Language of Architecture course is a self-study course. You will need approximately 40 hours to study the material and complete the assignments.
We recommend following the module in a semi-intensive program of about 10 hours per week over a period of 4 weeks.
Materials
The Language of Architecture module is accessible via onlinecourses.tudelft.nl . After enrolling, you will get access to the online materials, which are divided into four sections: Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning and Technical Aspects.
The course materials include:
- Video clips from lectures of the BSc Architecture program
- Word lists (without translations) for each video and a summary list at the end of the module
- Questions, exercises, and review tasks related to the video clips. Some exercises can be self-assessed using sample answers. Two assignments (a summary and a presentation) should be uploaded for feedback from the teacher.
Enrollment
The Language of Architecture course can only be taken after successfully completing the Third Round (Advanced Course) or the NT2 State Exam (Level II).
If you already have a very high level of Dutch - for example, because you have Dutch parents or have lived in the Netherlands for a long time - you can take a placement test to determine whether you need this course.
If you have passed all four sections of the NT2 State Exam (Level II), we kindly request a copy of your certificates.

After enrolling, you will receive further information and can start the self-study course at any time. Exam dates will be determined in consultation with the relevant instructors.
For students starting their Architecture studies from 2024 onwards, passing the Language of Architecture course is mandatory for admission to the program.
Costs and Payment
The course fee for Language of Architecture is € 195,- including access to the online materials, teacher feedback on assignments, and an exam.
This price is valid until August 1, 2025 (subject to price changes).
The course fee can be paid via bank transfer. After registration, you will receive further information regarding payment.
From August 1, 2025, the course will be expanded with new modules, and the new course price will be € 285,-.
