About the ELLIS Unit Delft
Machine learning has quickly developed into a critical sub-field of computer science. It is of particular importance for TU Delft due to its transformative and disruptive implications for engineering and design disciplines, and more broadly the university’s strategic agenda of impact for a sustainable society. It has become foundational to many of the research, education, and innovation activities across campus. Given TU Delft’s mission of positive societal impact, there is an opportunity to develop a unique strength in machine learning that focuses on bridging the theory-practice divide.
In December 2019, ELLIS selected TU Delft for establishing one of its units for European research excellence in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning. The unit is comprised of researchers affiliated with TU Delft who work on tackling fundamental challenges in AI with a focus on research excellence and societal impact.
Mission
‘a hub for machine learning for the real world’
Creating positive impact both in the academic discipline of machine learning, as well as on society
Approach
Foster meaningful collaborations at local, national, and European levels through community building and knowledge exchange activities, to align fundamental developments ‘in-AI’ with domain-specific applications and societal challenges.
Research Expertise
The ELLIS Unit Delft currently has almost 40 faculties members representing four faculties. Research activities encompass a wide range of techniques and applications within machine learning, which can be broadly categorised into six themes:
